First Direct Detection of Gravitational Waves
On September 14, 2015, the two LIGO detectors made the first direct observation of gravitational waves, produced by two merging black holes. The detection confirmed a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opened a new way to study the universe. Announced in 2016, the discovery began the era of gravitational-wave astronomy after decades of theoretical work and increasingly sensitive experiments.
