CNN launches as first 24-hour cable news network
On June 1, 1980, Cable News Network (CNN) launched as the world's first 24-hour cable news channel. Founded by Ted Turner and broadcast from Atlanta, it began with an audience of about 1.7 million homes and reshaped how Americans (and eventually the world) consumed news.

On June 1, 1794, a British Royal Navy fleet under Admiral Lord Howe defeated a French fleet in the Atlantic west of Ushant — the first major naval battle of the French Revolutionary Wars. Six French ships were captured and one sunk, though a vital French grain convoy still reached Brest.

On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson — better known as Marilyn Monroe — was born in Los Angeles. She became one of the most iconic film stars and cultural figures of the 20th century before her death in August 1962 at age 36.

On June 1, 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th US state. Carved from territory south of the Ohio River and previously the southwestern frontier of North Carolina, it became the first state created from federal territory.

On June 1, 2009, Air France Flight 447 — an Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris — crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during a severe thunderstorm, killing all 228 people aboard. The accident exposed flaws in pitot tube icing behavior and pilot stall response and reshaped airline training worldwide.
