On March 26, 1953, Dr. Jonas Salk announced over CBS Radio that he had successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis — the crippling disease that had paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year. On March 26, 1997, San Diego County deputies responding to a tip entered a rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe and found 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult dead — arranged in neat bunks, each dressed in black, purple shrouds pulled over their faces. On March 26, 1945, the last organized Japanese resistance on Iwo Jima was crushed, ending one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific Theater. Over 36 days, nearly 7,000 Americans died and 20,000 were wounded on an island barely eight square miles. The Japanese garrison of 21,000 fought almost to the last man. The battle had been declared won weeks earlier — the flag already planted on Suribachi — but the dying continued long after.
