British Parliament Passes the Stamp Act
On March 22, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, imposing the first direct tax on the American colonies. On March 22, 1960, Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes were granted U.S. Patent 2,929,922 for an 'optical maser' — the device the world would come to know as the laser. Townes had already won a Nobel Prize for his earlier work on the maser, which amplified microwave radiation using stimulated emission. On March 22, 1995, cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov stepped out of a Soyuz descent capsule onto the Kazakh steppe, completing 437 days and 18 hours aboard the Mir space station — the longest single spaceflight in human history, a record that still stands. Launched on January 8, 1994, Polyakov spent more than 14 months orbiting Earth roughly 16 times per day, watching the seasons turn from a vantage point few humans have ever known. The mission was a medical milestone: scientists needed to understand whether the human body could endure the roughly two years a Mars round-trip would demand. On March 22, 1945, representatives of six Arab states — Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria — signed the charter of the Arab League in Cairo, formalizing a pan-Arab political organization that had been under negotiation since 1943. The League was born into a world being reordered: the Ottoman Empire's collapse had left the Arab world fragmented into colonial mandates and client kingdoms, and the end of the Second World War was accelerating decolonization across the Middle East and North Africa. British diplomat Anthony Eden had encouraged Arab unity as a wartime ally; the Arab leaders themselves sought a collective voice in postwar negotiations, particularly on the question of Palestine. The charter committed members to coordinate political, economic, cultural, and social policy while preserving each state's sovereignty. Over the decades the League expanded to 22 members and became a permanent forum for regional diplomacy, though its ability to enforce collective decisions has remained a persistent limitation.

On March 22, 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière projected a short film — 'La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière' (Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory) — before a private audience at the Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale in Paris. It was the first time a motion picture was shown to an audience using the Cinématographe, the brothers' remarkable invention that served as camera, printer, and projector in a single hand-cranked device. Unlike Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope — a peephole machine for a single viewer — the Lumière device projected images onto a screen for a roomful of spectators, and the shared experience of watching moving images together would define cinema from that moment forward. By the end of 1895, the Lumières had opened the world's first commercial cinema in the basement of a Paris café.
